NAUTICAL CHARTS
So, now, as a Boatswain, he ploughs and uses the Charts of the Sea. The second stage in the exploration of the Elements.
There is a sort of communion between the Flyer and the Boatswain created by the journey. Cardinal points stay unchanged, only the Navigator's attitude are not. Nautical Charts, essential instrument when we are following navigation and orientation marks, are here used to distract and wonder among the signs. The morfology of things can, through the dream and, sometimes, through the frenzy, describe our thoughts. As much these are light and downy, as much those second their drowing, laying quiet and taking lovely forms; if these are shaggy and quarrelsome, they model on their mood, granitic and firm in animal forms. On a chart can naturally be involved a sign of a big tale. so, this Narrator, only with his colours, distracts our eye from the surroundings, from the initial and final aims of a vojage, emerging it in a middle world, where every straight line of route is cancelled. From the port of La Habana we can reach Santo Domingo on the dorsal crest of a huge Hydroplantigrade and ride on the Guadeloupe-butterfly over a large part of the sea. We can only add to this geography other signs and other thoughts, which are perhaps the last odds and ends of the voyage. The careful explorer is accompained on the traces of these pages by melville's secret archipelago. He was the forerunner in telling the forms a novel plot can take while unfolding on a map. Seen with the eyes of the sea-survivors or of the Argonauts, the alphabet letters can be islands as well as a whaleboat profile. So, travelling, we can look at the sea and change its colour. CARTE NAUTICHE
